Doing Our Part For Homeless Animals

Doing Our Part For Homeless Animals

Fall is a big deal at our aviary and on the 26th and 27th October we will be hosting our 2nd annual ParrotFest. We love Halloween around here so we are turning this year's event into a spooky one. Come in costume and receive a free toy for your bird!

We will be offering huge savings throughout the store and there will be tons of fun for the whole family including live music, free food and drinks, pumpkin painting, trick or treating and BABY GOAT SNUGGLES! This event is our way of showing our appreciation for all of our loyal customers and to educate as many new or future parrot owners as possible.

There is one aspect of ParrotFest that I'd like to highlight in more detail: as a local, family owned business, it is important to give back to our community and help spread awareness for organizations that are doing a lot of good in our area. Since we love both of these organizations we decided to split our fundraising efforts between the Friends of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter and Paws For Seniors.

We raised nearly $1000 for Friends at last year's ParrotFest and were thrilled to help local animals in need. Friends of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides support, educational outreach, help for victims of domestic violence and their pets, funding for medical procedures and equipment, provide enrichment items for pets and much, much more.

Friends works closely with the Fairfax County Animal Shelter and its staff and sponsors special adoption events at the shelter. With over 5,000 animals coming through the doors of the animal shelter annually, Friends helps the Fairfax County Animal Shelter save so many lives while enriching those that are still waiting for homes!

Recently, Tammy and I adopted two homeless cats but these weren't just any kitties! Hubba and Bubba are sweet and loving 9-year-old brothers who desperately needed a permanent home. After their owner passed away, Hubba and Bubba found their way to Jim at Paws For Seniors.

Hubba and Bubba weigh over 20 pounds each and, in combination with their age and the need to be adopted together, Paws For Seniors knew they would be hard to place. The boys are now enjoying their days opening all of the cabinets (lazy susans are their favorite), throwing out any contents, and then sleeping inside their newly created space.

Paws For Seniors is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization run by husband and wife team, Jim and Brenda. Their mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and find homes for senior pets. They also provide end of life care for pets that are too old or sick to be adopted! Paws For Seniors also visits senior care facilities to help socialize their animals and works to match up pets with senior citizens. Jim and Brenda also work to educate the public on animal welfare and to provide awareness of the care and needs of rescued pets, and they care deeply for every animal they meet.

I know we all get many requests to support various charities or organizations so it can sometimes be hard to pick where our hard-earned money goes. However, there are countless animals in desperate need and the hardworking people who care for them will be extremely grateful for donations of any amount, or even donations of unopened food or new pet supplies and toys. We understand this is not always possible so we still hope to get as many people as possible to come to ParrotFest and participate in our awesome raffles. You can win all kinds of cool stuff like a bird cage, free avitrims for a whole year (no matter how many birds you have), an indestructible Java Tree, an extra large Macaw toy, mystery toy bags to fit every size bird and more!

I'd like to give a special thanks to Don and A&E Cage Company for their generous donations of two table top Java Trees for our raffles. A&E is our main cage supplier and has been a big supporter of our business.

I'd also like to thank Ron from Pet Terrific. Pet Terrific makes some of our most popular toys and Ron is always a pleasure to work with. Ron is an animal lover just like us and graciously donated lots of awesome toys for us to raffle off. Thank you both!

To those who plan to participate, we can’t thank you enough and we look forward to seeing everyone this weekend!
